Chapati (Flat Bread)

Chapati
It is Indian Bread made of wholemeal flour.
Past few months, my daughter has been eating Chapati and
I told myself that I need to learn to made it.
At least, she can eat it any time of the day,
without us driving all the way to buy it for her.
After some research via internet and advice from Indian friends,
I have the courage to make it and to my surprise,
it is very successful after 1st attempt.

225g wholemeal flour
1/2 cup of warm water and mix with 1/2 tsp of salt
1 tablespoon of corn oil or ghee

Pour the wholemeal flour into a bowl.
Make a hollow in the center.

Pour oil into the center of the wholemeal flour.

Use your fingers, stir it twice.

And then with your fingers, rub the wholemeal flour and oil.

Then, pour 1/2 of the salt water and knead the dough for 10 minutes.

Lastly, pour in the balance of the salt water and
knead for another 5 minutes.

Look like this after kneading.

Cover. Let it rest for 1/2 an hour to 45 minutes.
(If you do not have a bowl cover, then use damp cloth)

After the dough has rested, take it out to a floured table.

Cut into 8 pieces.

And roll each piece into round shape.

Put at one side.

Flatten with a roller pin to your desired thickness.
(we prefer to the thinnest)

We are not expert, so we do not have round shape.
All rolled by my dear daughter.
I can see she is having a fun time rolling those dough
while I am heating the pan.

Heat up griddle (if you have it) or non-stick pan.
We do not use any oil.

Place the flatten dough into the hot non-stick pan.

Once you noticed some bubble appear, flip to the other side.

Cook further.

My daughter and I managed to make 8 pieces.
By the time I have washed all the utensils, left only 3 pieces
because my daughter and husband said it is yummy!!!
eventhough eating without curry.
My daughter told everyone in the house not to finish it because
she is saving for tomorrow breakfast!
I have taught her to use the steamer to warm the bread for breakfast.
Happy Eating, my dear daughter.
